It was around 1994 that I completely flipped out about health. In fact, I quit a well-paying job and wrested free from the Midwestern comfort of family and friends to follow the call of something I couldn’t yet name, but knew it had to do with health, out in the great wild west of San Francisco.

That something turned out to be health education. Then came herbal studies. And after that, nutrition consulting. I was in deep.

Along the way I began experimenting with herbs in my own kitchen. Teas, tinctures, balms, oils, soups, tonics – I loved it all. My first blend was The Cold Shoulder, and I still have the original hand-scratched recipe for inspiration.

More recipes followed, each with its own sassy name. I was devoted to this process of creating good-tasting healthy brews out of the best quality organic herbs I could find, but it still wasn’t quite enough.

I wanted to help make people feel better even if they never drank a drop of the tea. I wanted to create something they could relate to, and that might even make them laugh. I was high on the idea of creating a business that actually did good business, for people and the planet. And yes, I wanted to make something pretty.

This is the stuff that hooked me. And this is how I ended up making organic tea with good intentions.

So even though I will most always run and say things my way, you’ll hopefully take comfort knowing I’m doing so with what’s best for you in mind.

Sassafras Founder & Owner

Our good intentions are more than just lip service. Here’s a look at what we’re doing now, and we’re always striving to do more.

  • Providing discounts on tea refills to promote re-use of our tins.
  • Packaging refills in biodegradable bags made of vegetable cellulose.
  • Using web hosting services that offset energy consumption through the purchase of wind power credits.
  • Donating a percentage of profits to organizations working on behalf of human health and the environment. Through 2008, 3% of every purchase of Aunty Ox will be donated to the Breast Cancer Fund.
  • Buying herbs and other raw materials from smaller companies with a proven commitment to integrity and quality, even when it’s cheaper to buy elsewhere.
  • Using recycled materials in outgoing shipments, even when it’s prettier to start with new.
